- The 5th Session of the U.S.-Nigeria Binational Commission (BNC) was held on Monday, 3 February 2020 at the U.S. Department of Commerce in Washington, DC. NIPC participated actively in this year’s BNC, which was themed: ‘Mutual Prosperity through Innovation and Ingenuity” reflecting the entrepreneurial, inventive and industrious spirit shared by Nigerians and Americans.
- The Nigerian delegation was led by Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, and comprised of the Honourable Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Honourable Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Honourable Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Group Managing Director of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Executive Secretary/CEO of Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, among others.
- Both delegations engaged in productive conversations on the need to further strengthen economic and security ties between the two countries. The 2020 BNC witnessed the signing of an agreement between the U.S. Government, the Bailiwick of Jersey, and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the return of more than $308 stolen under the General Sani Abacha administration, to Nigeria. The United States also announced additional $40 million in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria, adding to the nearly $350 million that was provided in 2019.
