NIPCO Gas Limited, a major player in the Autogas industry, and Femadec Express, a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered mass transportation and logistics service company, have announced plans to convert 10,000 vehicles to CNG by 2023. The initiative is aimed at deepening the Federal Government's Autogas policy, launched by President Buhari in December 2020.
Under the partnership, Femadec Express will leverage NIPCO Gas's capacity and AutoCNG distribution network across several states. NIPCO Gas is also expanding its vehicle CNG retail stations by 45 additional stations in partnership with NNPC/NGMC, with completion expected within 2022. As Femadec plans to expand its fleet to 100 buses and extend its routes to other regions, NIPCO Gas is aligning its operational and infrastructural expansion accordingly.
Nigeria has proven domestic natural gas reserves of over 200 trillion cubic feet (Tcf), expected to reach 600 Tcf as deliberate gas exploration expands. Of Nigeria's estimated 12 million vehicles running on petrol and diesel, fewer than 10,000 have so far been converted to CNG — making the programme a significant step in unlocking the country's gas potential for domestic energy security.
